School of Communication & Management Studies
Founded in 1976 by the visionary Dr. G.P.C. Nayar, the School of Communication and Management Studies (SCMS) in Cochin stands as a hallmark of educational excellence in communication and management. Pioneering in Kerala with government-recognized postgraduate diplomas in Public Relations, Advertising and Journalism, SCMS has been a trendsetter, accredited by the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI). Over the decades, we’ve sculpted over 10,000 students into industry leaders, with our alumni shaping the global media landscape.

SCMS Milestones
Launch of Distance Learning Diplomas
In 1980, SCMS introduced one-year PG Diplomas in Public Relations, Journalism and Advertising via correspondence, with classes and exams in six cities across India and the Middle East. This marked a significant step in making quality education accessible beyond geographical boundaries.

Introduction of Full-Time Courses and Government Recognition
In 1987, SCMS began offering full-time courses in Trivandrum, Delhi and Cochin. The same year, the Government of Kerala recognized SCMS’s PG Diplomas as equivalent to university degrees, enhancing their value for public service appointments.
Expansion into Business Administration
In 1991 when Govt. of India liberalized the education sector along with other sectors Dr. Nayar started the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBA). PGDBA was conducted in the Kalassery campus.

Mass Communication

Advertising

The success of advertising depends on a scientific, disciplined process of situation analysis, creative thinking, planning, organising and implementation with excellent understanding and teamwork.
The power and need for advertising are increasing multifold world over with the ever-increasing stiff competition in the global market. The advertising industry in our country is keen on absorbing young promising qualified specialists to take up challenging assignments in every department of the advertising business.
Journalism
Our Journalism program at SCMS nurtures students to be ethical journalists, shaping informed public discourse and opinion. With a rich legacy and successful alumni, we prepare students for impactful careers in print and electronic media.
The significance and scope of journalism have multiplied a thousand times in the recent past, as a result of the dramatic advancement made in communication technology, print and video production, round-the-clock multichannel TV telecast, web publishing, specializations in areas like business journalism, financial journalism, stock market journalism etc. The old concept of journalism has given way to high-tech instant reporting, live telecasting, multi locational live telecasting etc.
The training and skill development required by a journalist today is far more complex than what it was earlier. Only by systematic education and training under expert guidance, one can expect to take up these challenging jobs. Opportunities are plenty for those with the right aptitude and skill.
Mode of Teaching
Our teaching methods at SCMS distinguish us from other institutions. The course curriculum are meticulously crafted to be unique and intensely practical. By employing advanced teaching tools such as overhead projectors, stereo systems, LCD projectors, TVs, and VCRs, we ensure that our education is both effective and focused on real-world outcomes. We further enhance learning with comprehensive on-the-job training, offering internships in newspapers, TV channels, advertising agencies, video production centers, public relations departments and industrial organizations. This approach equips our students with the professional skills necessary for successful careers after graduation.
A considerable amount of time is set apart for practical training in investigating news, writing news and features, reporting news and events, covering events and press conferences, editing news and features, page making and layout, desktop publishing, making multimedia presentations, public speaking and production of news and features for TV.
Practical sessions in conducting opinion surveys, preparing press releases, writing news, features, articles and speeches, making multimedia presentations, organising functions, designing and producing newsletters, scripting and producing newsletters, scripting and producing video programmes, etc. are given due importance in teaching methodology. Sufficient focus is given to skill development in areas like the right attitude formation, empathy, team spirit, enthusiasm, communication skills, human relations etc. Topics like media relations, employee relations, community relations, customer relations, crisis management etc. are taught through case study presentations, discussions and role plays. Group activities and counselling sessions significantly help in grooming the individual. Conducted tours and visits to industrial houses, newspapers, printing presses, TV channels, broadcasting stations etc. are also part of the study programme.
Extensive training is given to students in conducting market studies, copy writing, visualization, designing, layout, planning and scheduling media, campaign planning, audio visual techniques, making multimedia presentations, client servicing and such other skills required by an advertising professional. Workshops are conducted by experts from the industry in major areas of skill development.
