The Hon: National Green Tribunal in its order O.A 673/2018 dated 19/12/2018 has specifically noted that “contamination of water and deterioration of water quality are matters to be taken seriously as they affect public health and right of the citizen to have access to potable drinking water”. While the order has cited action plans made for tributaries of river Yamuna as a model, it is intended thatcollaborations with eminent technical institutes of the State, which would lead to innovative solutions would be pivotal. Based on this principle, directions were given to make concrete action plans for removal of pollutants from rivers as well as other waterbodies under state government agencies with the help of premier technical institutes.
In this regard, as per the order of the Honorable Green Tribunal of India with the assistance of Kerala Engineering and Research Institute and the Irrigation departments under the state government, The Department of Civil Engineering of SSET was allotted with Kechery River and Kadambrayar River stretches. An expert team consisting of faculty members from geotechnical, environmental and hydrology, along with research scholars and students set out for providing technical advice and assistance for pollution abatement.
