SSET is the only team from Kerala to participate STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION - ASME - USA

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), is a professional body of mechanical engineers, rated as one among the best in the world of its kind. SSET has established its ASME student chapter last year and students have been involved in notable engineering activities appreciated by officials of ASME India. ASME Engineer’s Fest (Efest) is one of the major student event organized by ASME in four regions of the world and the best performing professional students in various technical events will be getting an opportunity to compete in the main event, International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE.

A team of 4 students from Mechanical Engineering Department of SSET competed in ASME E-fest Asia Pacific held at Delhi Technological University in March 2018 and reached the final round to qualify themselves into IMECE 2018. On 25th of May 2018, the students provided an invitation to participate in the Student Design Competition Finals 2018 at Pittsburgh PA,USA from 9th-15thNovember.

The design challenge set forth was to design a football playing robot of a specified dimension and the skilful ingenuity to successfully compete and win a four-way football game. The students designed a Robot under the Centre of Robotics and Fablab of SSET with expert guidance from our faculty members and Senior students.

The students had to face a lot of difficulties in transporting the components of Robot to USA by air, some of the components were detained in the airport and they also had problems with their circuits designed under Indian conditions and fabricated by locally available parts. The students still cleared four rounds, making their way to the semi-final round and got knocked by the University of Florida who eventually grabbed first position in the Competition.

The students not only received certificates but also won appreciation from mentors of world class universities such as University of Florida, University of Las vegas Nevada and Baker College Michigen, and received invitation to visit their campuses. The students even though had to face defeat in the Competition but the acceptance they received from the various professors of these universities have given them a big motivation to strive for bigger engineering goals.

The students were invited to ASME headquarters in Network city where they met the Executive Director and technical team and completion of the interaction, the students were invited to join ASME “Staff or Volunteers after Graduation.

SSET is the only team from Kerala and one among eight teams from India, that got invited to USA for finals to participate in such a big event of Mechanical Engineering students across the world.

The following students of Fifth Semester Mechanical Engineering did this excellent job.

  • Anish B Soman
  • Anoop Anilkmar
  • Balendu Divakar
