Stormwater Management for Kalamassery

Kalamassery Municipality is a rapidly urbanizing area and the present study focused on modelling the urban flood scenario associated with Pottachal Thodu, a channel which flows through a major residential area, Alfia Nagar.  After a discussion with the representatives and by field visits from the study area namely Alfia Nagar, Kalamassery the background data for the work was collected and a storm water drainage model of the Pottachal Thodu was created using the MIKE+ software by DHI-India to identify the potential flood-prone locations within the residential areas and the present scenario was successfully simulated.  It was observed that insufficient channel width was one of the causes of the problem. So the model was also simulated considering the scenario after widening the channel width which showed the reduction in water levels in comparison to the previous scenario. Evaluating the major aspects regarding the problem, recommendations were framed among which the widening at the specified flood-prone zones and the cleaning of the channel is of high importance.
