About OrSo
The Oratory Society (OrSo), functioning under the Department of Basic Science and Humanities at SCMS School of Engineering and Technology (SSET), is a vibrant student-driven platform that nurtures confident communicators, thoughtful leaders, and socially responsible individuals. Through a blend of academic and co-curricular activities, the society encourages students to express their ideas with confidence, think critically, and develop the communication and leadership skills essential for both personal and professional growth.
Major Activities
Verbena – Monthly Prepared Speech Competition
Verbena is OrSo’s signature monthly programme where students present prepared speeches on a variety of themes. The event helps participants improve their public speaking, stage presence, confidence, and presentation skills while creating a supportive environment for learning and constructive feedback.
Vagmi – Annual Debate Competition
Vagmi is OrSo’s annual intra-college debate competition that brings together students from different departments to discuss contemporary issues. The competition promotes analytical thinking, respectful dialogue, and the ability to present well-reasoned arguments with confidence.
SSET Model United Nations (SSETMUN)
SSETMUN is the flagship initiative of OrSo. Bringing together delegates from schools and colleges across South India, the conference provides students with an immersive experience in diplomacy and international relations through committee sessions, negotiations, and resolution drafting. It develops research, leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while broadening students’ global outlook.
MUN Workshops and Intra-MUN
Throughout the year, OrSo conducts MUN workshops and Intra-MUN conferences to prepare students for national and international Model United Nations events. These sessions introduce participants to committee procedures, research techniques, diplomatic communication, and resolution writing in a practical and engaging manner.
TEDxSCMS School of Engineering and Technology
OrSo also organised TEDxSCMS School of Engineering and Technology, an independently licensed TEDx event that brought together inspiring speakers from diverse fields. The event encouraged curiosity, innovation, and meaningful conversations while giving students valuable hands-on experience in planning and managing a large-scale professional event.
Communication and Leadership Development
In addition to its flagship programmes, OrSo regularly organises workshops, interactive sessions, and training programmes on public speaking, presentation skills, communication, and leadership. Students also take active roles in organising events, helping them build teamwork, organisational skills, and confidence.
Impact
Over the years, OrSo has grown into one of the most active student societies at SSET. By combining public speaking, debating, diplomacy, leadership, and experiential learning, the society has created a vibrant platform where students discover their potential, build confidence, and prepare themselves to excel in academics, professional careers, and life.
